Kenya has taken an early procedural step toward upgrading the Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba highway after commissioning a pre-feasibility study under a proposed public-private partnership (PPP) structure.
- •The study, which is expected to run for several months, will assess the technical, economic, environmental, and financial viability of upgrading the road corridor.
- •Findings from the assessment will inform whether the project proceeds to a full feasibility study and transaction structuring phase, a process that is anticipated to continue into 2026.
- •The road forms part of the Northern Corridor, a key regional transport route linking Kenya to Uganda and the wider East and Central African region.
Persistent congestion, rising traffic volumes, and safety concerns have strengthened the case for capacity expansion and operational upgrades along the corridor. If approved, the project would be implemented through a private partner responsible for financing, construction, operation, and maintenance, with procurement expected to begin in 2027.
The project is being overseen by the National Treasury’s PPP Directorate in collaboration with the Kenya National Highways Authority and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
