Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA) has signed a KSh 17 billion contract with China Communication Construction Company Limited to construct the 453 Kilometre Lamu-Ijara-Garissa Road. The scope of work also involves the construction of all associated spur roads to an all-weather gravel standard.
The tender has been signed by KeNHA Director General Eng. Peter Mundinia, together with the General Manager M/S China Communication Construction Company Limited.

According to project documents posted on the KeNHA website, this road section is part of the LAPSSET Corridor Development Project. Works on the entire road project will take three years to complete.
This road project road forms the initial part of the 1,250 Km road from Lamu to the Sudan LAPSSET corridor. It aims to improve the efficiency of road transport along the Lapsset Corridor and provide the Missing link between Lamu Port and A2 roads.
The road link will also improve accessibility to Lamu Port and the proposed resort cities along the Lappset Corridor and enhance security operations and response to security concerns within the North Eastern Region.
The first part of this project will involve constructing the 257 kilometres Lamu – Garissa road, which forms the initial part of the LAPSSET corridor. This road is located in the Eastern Coastal region of Kenya, running from Lamu to Garissa towards the Northern direction.
The second part will involve the construction of the Budhei – Basuba – Kiunga (A11) Road
The project road is located in Lamu County of Coast Region, with the works situated along with the existing Hindi – Budhei – Basuba – Kiunga (A11) road in Lamu County.
The project road starts from Budhei Junction Centre and runs easterly to Kiunga. This section of road is approximately 110km. Additionally, an extra 20km of road is proposed for the construction of the Kiunga township roads.
According to KeNHA tender document No- KeNHA/2405/2021, dated April 2021, section three of the project involves the construction of Ijara – Hulugho Road.
The project road is located in Garissa County of Coast Region. It starts at Ijara Centre (junction B93/A10) and runs in an Easterly direction to terminate at Hulugo Centre.
The works are located along the existing road with an approximate length of 100Km. An additional 10km of road is proposed for township roads.
The contract period for the entire project will be 36 months, including 24 months for phase one, which involves works supervision and construction of Lamu-Ijara-Garissa (257kms) to gravel standards within the contract period.
Construction of Lamu – Ijara – Garissa (A10) Road & Associated Spur Roads to All Weather Gravel Standard will take 12 months of the contract period. The spur roads shall be
completed within the contract period.
