KenGen launches its community involvement program

KenGen has launched a program to provide communities with a greater voice in the priorities and decisions of the company.

The strategy will promote sustainable operations by adopting practices that are responsive to the needs of local communities. For instance, it will assess the cultural appropriateness of projects with the goal of protecting local culture and lifestyle.

In addition, there will be capacity building and positive contribution to education through projects like school infrastructure development, scholarship for bright, needy students, and provision of clean drinking water.

The strategy relies on the principles of proactive consultation, inclusive participation, disclosure, and access to information. The program aligns with KenGen’s commitment to providing value for all stakeholders as it seeks to champion community interests.

Engagement with communities across the country will ensure environmental conservation through projects that are ecologically sensitive and responsive to the needs of the local communities.

KenGen has outlined a medium-term plan to generate 5000 megawatts of power as part of the Vision2030 plan. The strategy is part of KenGen’s business sustainability strategy to improve business resilience and have increased growth based on return on investment.

Joshua Choge, KenGen board chairman, said that engaging the communities in which KenGen operates is key to the success of their operations. There will be social benefits for local communities such as water supply and affordable, reliable access to energy.

KenGen has put in billions into energy projects in geothermal, hydro, and wind power. Engaging communities will see reduced direct project costs.

Additionally, the organization will have faster project implementation due to reduced litigation and breach of legal obligation where KenGen plans to engage communities in all stages of the project implementation.
