Electricity generating firm Kenya Electricity Generating Company Plc (KenGen) has been admitted to campaign against global warming, becoming the first public firm in Kenya to do so.
This ‘Business Ambition for 1.50C’ campaign is supported by United Nations, leaders, business firms and NGOs.
KenGen is expected to set emission reduction targets through green and clean energy while limiting global warming to 1.5°C as stipulated under the 2015 Paris Agreement.
Under this arrangement, KenGen commits to annually disclose its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions as a way of checking and reducing its carbon footprint.
According to KenGen Managing Director and CEO, Mrs Rebecca Miano, the firm has shifted its investments to green and renewable energy while also harnessing low carbon energy sources.
Mrs Miano said KenGen joined the UNGC in May 2019 as a tier II participant. The UNGC Kenya is the local chapter of the global campaign.
KenGen’s commitment comes when the world is working towards stemming the climate change crisis by setting science-based reduction targets to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and zero 20 years later.
Available data indicates that if governments and businesses do not slow down global emissions, temperatures could rise above 3degrees Celcius by 2100, damaging the ecosystems.
Apart from green energy generation, KenGen is also involved in the Clean Mechanisms Development initiative and has so far registered six of its power projects under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
