NSE Kenya Listed Kenya Electricity Generating Company Ltd (KenGen) has contracted a group led by Japanese industrial major Mitsubishi Corp to build a 140-MW geothermal power plant in Kenya (Olkaria V).
Mitsubishi, together with Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Ltd and local firm H Young & Co (EA) Ltd (HY), will work on the fifth in a series of geothermal projects developed in Kenya’s Olkaria area. The so-called Olkaria V scheme will be financed by an Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Under the terms of the contract, Mitsubishi will supply the main equipment for the plant, while MHPS will take responsibility for in-land transportation and installation. HY, in turn, will supply the remaining components and undertake civil engineering and installation works.
Mitsubishi and MHPS have also worked together on the 45-MW Olkaria I, 70-MW Olkaria II and 35-MW Olkaria III projects. Once Olkaria V enters into service in 2019, they will have added 290 MW of geothermal capacity, more than 10% of the country’s total energy.
