Diamond Trust Bank and Kenya Bankers Association Collaborate to Empower SMEs with ESG Practices

In a strategic effort to drive sustainable business growth and promote responsible practices among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) partnered with the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) to conduct an extensive training program on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. Held in close cooperation with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and facilitated by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the training sought to sensitize nearly 100 MSMEs, empowering them to adopt sustainable development strategies and enhance the overall resilience of the local business sector.

The comprehensive training, led by renowned experts in the field, aimed to equip MSMEs with the essential tools and knowledge needed to embrace sustainable practices, fostering a culture of responsible business in Kenya. Recognizing the significance of engaging this critical segment of their customer base, DTB’s Finance and Strategy Director, Alkarim Jiwa, emphasized the bank’s commitment to advancing the adoption of ESG principles across the business landscape.

Dr. Samuel Tiriongo, KBA’s Director of Research and Policy, expressed his views on the importance of MSMEs in the country’s economic growth and highlighted the banking sector’s commitment to sustainable finance.

The training program, organized in partnership with WWF, underscored the role of finance as a significant catalyst in influencing sustainable outcomes that benefit both livelihoods and the environment. Christine Mwangi, the Regional Coordinator of the ASI Programme from WWF Kenya, said the training would empower MSMEs to thrive in the rapidly evolving business landscape while making a positive difference in society and the environment.

As part of its broader sustainability agenda, DTB is set to continue advancing the adoption of ESG principles by holding a similar engagement forum with its suppliers. This effort aims to promote a responsible supply chain, fostering a holistic approach to sustainability.
