Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) will auction about 100 abandoned aeroplanes belonging to multiple agencies and individuals over parking charges.
A notice from KAA’s Acting Managing Director, Alex Gitari, calls upon Jetlink, the Somali Airforce, Aerospace, and Jubba Airways to claim the aeroplanes within thirty days, saying that they pose safety risks. Operators like Fly540, Skyward, Fayaka Airways, and Airkenya have until September 14 to collect the planes, which risk auction after the September deadline.
“NOTICE is given pursuant to the provision of Disposal of Uncollected Goods Act (Cap. 38) of the laws of Kenya, to the parties below to take delivery of the aeroplanes parked at various airport’s apron/airside areas or any unserviceable aeroplanes parked in the airport movement area in absolute contravention of ICAO safety standards, which delivery must be done within thirty (30) days,” reads Gitari’s notice published in the recent Kenya Gazette Notice.
Abandoned aeroplanes belonging to institutions of learning like Moi University and Skylink also risk auction. Individuals and companies will have to pay pending charges before claiming their aircraft. Otherwise, the agency shall sell the abandoned aeroplanes to cover costs and claim remaining balances from the owners.
“…the said aircraft will be sold by public auction, and the proceeds of the sale shall be defrayed against any incurred charges and the balance, if any, shall remain at the owners’ credit, but should there be a shortfall, the owner shall be liable thereof.”
Sixty-four planes awaiting the auction are now in Wilson Airport, 14 in Lokichoggio Airport, 8 in Moi International Airport while 16 are in JKIA.
