Fintech Association of Kenya Appoints Esteemed Corporate Lawyer Joseph Githaiga to Advisory Board

The Fintech Association of Kenya has announced the appointment of Joseph Githaiga, an accomplished corporate lawyer and regulatory compliance expert, to its Advisory Board effective May 1, 2024. Joseph Githaiga brings to the board a profound expertise shaped by his extensive career, notably as a Partner and Co-Founder at Spencer West LLP and former Director and Head of Legal Business Solutions at PwC Kenya.

    • •With over a decade of leadership in the legal and regulatory fields, Githaiga has developed innovative legal and regulatory solutions across diverse sectors, including finance, technology, and corporate governance.
    • •His tenure at PwC Kenya was marked by creating a bespoke legal consulting division, providing comprehensive services ranging from M&A support to regulatory compliance and corporate restructuring.
    • •Prior to PwC, Githaiga held significant roles at Standard Chartered Bank, managing compliance across East Africa for the Corporate & Institutional Banking sectors, and at Coulson Harney Advocates, where he specialized in corporate legal strategies and transactions.

Duncun Motanya, the Fintech Association of Kenya Chairperson, expressed his appreciation for Githaiga joining the association. He said, “Joseph Githaiga has played an active role in shaping policy, advocacy, and regulatory framework in the fintech sector. Together with the Digital Lenders Association of Kenya, Joseph initiated a comparative study on the regulation of digital lending and recommended a less complicated licensing framework that enhances consumer protection through the regulation of the conduct of credit providers through the development and enactment of a consumer credit code that embeds the principles of consumer protection in lending.

“Joseph was also instrumental in the research and report associated with TheCityUK in 2022. This research examined the challenges faced by FinTech stakeholders. It made recommendations aimed at contributing to developing a framework that will build on Kenya’s existing framework while further enhancing the operating environment for Fintech firms in the country. Joseph’s extensive experience in regulatory affairs and corporate law, along with his strategic insights, will be of great value as we navigate the complexities of the fintech landscape and advocate for progressive regulatory frameworks.”

Upon his appointment, Joseph Githaiga shared, “I am honored to serve on the Advisory Board of the Fintech Association of Kenya. This role offers an exciting opportunity to leverage my experience in fostering robust regulatory practices and corporate governance to support the growth and sustainability of the fintech sector in Kenya and beyond.”

Joseph Githaiga will work alongside recent appointees, including Frank Molla, focusing on enhancing the association’s strategic partnerships and governance frameworks. His advisory role will be pivotal in driving initiatives aimed at promoting ethical business practices and facilitating strategic growth within the fintech community.
