President Uhuru Kenyatta has nominated Nancy Janet Kabui Gathungu as the Auditor General pending National Assembly’s vetting and approval.
Gathungu was among ten candidates vetted by the Recruitment panel including; Leonard Lari, Edwin Kamar, Benson Okundi, Silvester Kiini, Elizabeth Nguring’a, Idris Abdullahi, Meshack Onyango, Nancy Gathungu, Paul Masinde, and Dennis Kariuki.
She emerged the first among the top three candidates presented to the President. Ms Gathungu will serve for a non-renewable 8-year tenure should parliament approve her appointment.
Gathungu faces an uphill task of auditing backdated accounts of the national and county governments as her predecessor Edward Ouko retired in August 2019. In addition, she will need to go through the financial reports of state owned enterprises such as Kenya Power, KenGen, and East African Portland Cement.

Delayed Results
The absence of the Auditor General has seen state corporations delay the release of their audited financial reports. State Controlled companies must secure the Auditor General’s approval before reporting the audited financial results.
As late as this week, Kenya Re moved to court seeking extension of time to hold its AGM. The reinsurer lamented that its annual financial statements were yet to be signed off by the auditor general pursuant to the Public Audit Act.
