James Githii Mburu to Replace John Njiraini as New KRA Commissioner General

James Githii Mburu has been appointed as the new Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), replacing Mr John Njiraini whose term ends in June.

In a special gazette notice issued on June 4, 2019, and published on Thursday, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich said that Mr Mburu would assume office from July 1 and serve for three years.

Until his appointment, Mr Mburu was the KRA commissioner in charge of intelligence and strategic operations.

KRA sought the services of PWC to recruit the new boss who emerged top in a shortlist of five including Mr Julius Waita Mwatu, Mr Richard Boro Ndung’u, Mr Andrew Kazora Okello and Mr Duncan Otieno Onduru.

Former commissioner-general, Njiraini had attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 on December 19, 2017, but his term was extended causing huge controversy at the agency.

Recently, he was recalled from his terminal leave to “manage the crisis” after the agency was hit by one of the biggest corruption scandals.

Mburu has previously warned that KRA may not be as docile at it appears. “Most of the transactions people think they have done behind the government’s nose have a way of tracking back to the individual,” he was quoted by Nation at a previous interview.
