The Isiolo International Airport will resume operations in January, according to disclosures by Rtd Col Cyrus Oguna, the official Government spokesperson.
This aviation facility is part of links to the Lamu Port–South Sudan–Ethiopia-Transport (LAPSSET) transport corridor project and Kenya’s Vision 2030 blueprint.
It was launched by former President Mwai Kibaki in 2013 eight years ago and officially opened by President Uhuru Kenyatta five years later.
While the airport has been active, it has been given a wide berth by many airlines.
Isiolo International airport is operated by KAA
The airport, developed and operated by the Kenya Airports Authority, has now been upgraded to world standards to allow for the operation of local and international carriers.
It has a handling capacity of 125,000 passengers a year, with its terminal designed to accommodate more residents and tourists.
Isiolo International airport sits on an 800-acre piece of land with parking facilities that can take 200 vehicles.
Current works involve putting up cargo sheds and extending the runway from 1.4 km to 2.5 km.
These cargo sheds will be completed next month and will have the capacity to handle at least 10 tonnes, while an extension of the runway is to complete by December 2021.
According to Jacob Werner, Acting General manager, Business and Development at Kenya Airports Authority, this airport is considered the most strategic among the facilities operated by the state agency.
Isiolo, Meru and Laikipia growers are set to benefit from cargo shades at the Isiolo International Airport.
Small-scale farmers are the primary targets, as the facility will enable them to reach out to domestic, regional and global markets by cutting short the travel distance of the produce.
