Kenya’s insurance regulator has cancelled the licences of 20 insurance brokerage firms, citing persistent compliance failures and inactivity, in one of the most significant regulatory crackdowns on intermediaries in recent years.
In a statement published in the Kenya Gazette on July 18, 2025, the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) announced that the affected firms ceased transacting insurance business effective June 30, 2025, under Section 196(A) of the Insurance Act (Cap 487).
“The public should not transact any insurance business with the underlisted entities.”
said Godfrey Kiptum, Commissioner of Insurance
The IRA conducted a sector-wide audit to clean up the intermediary market. It flagged these brokers for failing to meet statutory requirements, including non-remittance of premiums, inadequate capitalisation, and failure to renew operational licences.
Moreover, the crackdown aligns with broader efforts to tighten governance standards across Kenya’s financial services sector, in line with anti-money laundering (AML) and financial reporting frameworks.
