Trade within the East African Community (EAC) dropped by 5.5% in 2020 to reach KSh649 billion, occasioned by the global COVID-19 pandemic that had a negative impact on trade.
EAC imports saw a decline to KSh396 billion in 2020 from KSh434.5 billion in 2019. However, exports from the bloc increased 3% year-on-year to KSh1.8 trillion.
Even though Tanzania and Kenya’s agriculture sectors registered positive growth throughout the pandemic, the growth was still below 5% and inconsistent.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s 2020 exports to the East African Community (EAC) rose by 12.7% to hit $1.44 billion (KSh158.3 billion), an increase from $1.28 billion (KSh140.4 billion) in 2019, accounting for 64.3% of the country’s total exports to Africa. Overall, Kenya’s exports to Africa rose by 9.8% to $2.24 billion, from $2.04 billion in 2019.
