At the recent Kauffman Fellows Africa VC Summit in Nairobi, we caught up with Tjaart Van Der Walt, Director and co-founder Tyme.
“We now have over 8 million customers on the book. We have in partnership with a family in the Philippines. We have operations in Vietman and Singapore. We hope to have a global presence in the near future,” said Tjaart Van Der Walt.
Tyme was established in South Africa in 2012 to create digital banking platforms for emerging markets and the idea was to reach out to those that are still underserved in these markets.
He said that while deciding which country to expand into Walt said among the key factors it considers is the progressive thinking of the regulator.
Tjaart Van Der Walt, who graduated as a young process engineer in 1993 and his PhD in artificial intelligence, spent his first pay by taking his close friends for a bush safari. He also saved part of his pay and used it to set up the banking business.
