Consumer prices increased significantly in the month of December 2018, compared to similar period last year, pushing inflation by 26.8 per cent to register 5.71, says Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.
In December, the consumer basket was heavily impacted by increase in transport (14.34%), rent, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (13.47%) compared to the same month in 2017.
The inflation rate was 2.3 per cent higher compared to the 5.58 registered in November, as the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 1.05 per cent.
During the same review period, the Transport Index increased by 1.34 per cent, mainly on account of increase in local and international flight charges as well as bus and matatu fares.
The upsurge in the transport, food, clothing and foot ware prices was attributed to increased demand that was associated to Christmas festivities.
