Data.ai has ranked ‘inDrive’ as the second most downloaded ride-hailing app in 2023 for the second consecutive year.
- At 66.6 million downloads in the previous year, the ‘inDrive’ app also rose to become the fourth most downloaded app in the travel industry.
- In 13 out of 46 countries, including Egypt and Morocco, the app was described as the ‘most popular’ cab service.
- The American digital cab platform operates in nine African countries including Kenya.
“We are delighted that inDrive has maintained its position as the second most downloaded ride-hailing app globally, a testament to the incredible efforts of our team and the trust our users place in us,” said ‘inDrive’ CEO Arsen Tomsky.
The company first launched in Kenya in 2019, as its third market on the continent after South Africa and Tanzania. In June 2023, the government issued a license to the company allowing it to operate in a competitive market currently dominated by Bolt and Uber. But the platform has been unable to scale up its services in Kenya.
To gain traction, the platform charges 10% commission from its drivers and allows them to negotiate their own prices.
Revenue in the Ride-hailing market is projected to reach US$165.60bn in 2024, according to Statista. The number of users is expected to amount to 1.97bn users by 2028.
The company was keen to vet its drivers to prevent rogue cases that have tarnished the Kenyan taxi landscape. This included criminal background checks and permit confirmation.
“inDrive is excited to contribute to the local transportation ecosystem, providing safe, reliable, and affordable mobility options to the people of Kenya,” said the company’s Kenyan representative Godfrey Mabula.
The company has also embraced electric vehicles in some markets in the Asia-Pacific region.
