Huawei is moving its research facilities from the US to Canada following continued sanctions on the company by US.
According to the company CEO, the move is necessary because Huawei will be blocked from interacting with its employees in the US. Earlier in June, Huawei cut its staff base at its Silicon valley research Facility by 600, leaving a mere 250 workers.
“The research and development centre will move from the United States, and Canada will be the centre,” Ren told Globe and Mail. “According to the U.S. ban, we couldn’t communicate with, call, email or contact our own employees in the United States.”

The interview from Globe & Mail also reveals that Huawei will move some of its production to Europe.
Reuters notes Huawei has been pushing suppliers to move their supply chain overseas. Suppliers that move their operations will be able to go around US sanctions, allowing them to sell components to the company.

Moving its research facilities is one of the ways Huawei is slowly reducing its dependency in the US. First, the company stopped using US components to build its 5G network gear. Later Huawei launched its folding Smartphone Mate X, made without US components or Google Apps.
