How to Cancel or Replace Money Orders

How to Cancel or Replace Money Orders

At some point, you might have to cancel a money order you purchased or replace one that you lost. The following is some information on how you can do that.

You may need to cancel money orders because you change your mind about a transaction. You might have to do so because you purchased one for a certain amount and then realized that it was supposed to be for a different amount. You could have a hundred reasons for it, and you can resolve them all. To cancel money orders, you must visit the place where you first purchased them. Examples might be the post office, bank, or a Western Union branch. The location will have a form you’ll need to complete. Once you complete this form, the investigation into the matter can begin. The process will be much easier if you have the original receipt from the purchase.

You might have to go through the process of replacing the document if you lose it, but you still want to pay for the product or service you bought. That’s possible. You will need to take your receipt to the post office or issuing entity to have them launch an official investigation. The entity will replace your money order once they confirm that it has been lost or stolen. You may have to pay a small fee of $6.25 or an amount in that range.

How Long Does the Process Take

The actual loss or theft of money orders can take approximately 30 days. In some cases, the investigations can take as long as 60 days. You have to remember to be patient during this process and understand that you will get your money returned or your money orders replaced once the issuing entity finishes its investigation. It will happen for you if you remain patient and do not get overly stressed about it.

How to Protect Yourself From Needing to Replace or Cancel Them

You can take some steps to ensure that you won’t have to cancel or replace money orders. Ensure that you only purchase money orders if you truly need them and confirm that the amount you need to write them for is correct. You also need to keep a close eye on where you place them. Use a certifiable service to send them if you intend to send them through the mail. Request signature confirmation to ensure that the recipient signs for the document. Those are a few ways you can prevent having to replace or cancel a money order. Keep those in mind, and you should do just fine in the future.

You should now understand that you have nothing to worry about when it comes to replacing or canceling this type of payment document. Visit the appropriate location to conduct your business and take your identification with you when you go. Handle yourself in the ways mentioned above, and you’ll be just fine.
