A Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN is a unique personal identification number assigned by the Kenya Revenue Authority.

It is mandatory for individuals and businesses engaging in financial, tax, and regulatory transactions in Kenya. Whether you are a Kenyan citizen or a foreigner, having a KRA PIN is essential for tax compliance and legal transactions.

A KRA PIN is required for:

    • •Filing tax returns (PAYE, VAT, corporate tax, etc.)
    • •Opening a bank account in Kenya
    • •Land transactions (buying, selling, or leasing property)
    • •Government tenders and business contracts
    • •Vehicle registration and transfer of ownership
    • •Employment purposes (some employers require it)
    • •Applying for business licenses
    • •Accessing financial services like loans and mortgages

The process for applying for a KRA PIN differs slightly for Kenyan citizens and foreigners, but both must apply through the iTax system, which is KRA’s online tax platform.

How to Apply for a KRA PIN in Kenya (For Kenyan Citizens)

1: Visit the KRA iTax Portal

Open your web browser and go to the KRA iTax portal.
    Click on “New PIN Registration.”

    2: Select Your Application Type

    • •Choose “Individual” if applying for a personal KRA PIN.
    • •Choose “Non-Individual” if applying for a business or company.

    3: Enter Your Personal Details

    • •ID Number: Your National ID Number is required for verification.
    • •Date of Birth: Ensure this matches the details on your National ID.
    • •Email Address: KRA will send login credentials here.
    • •Phone Number: Used for account verification.

4: Fill in Tax Obligation Details

KRA will ask you to specify your tax obligations. The common tax types include:

    • •Income Tax (for individuals & businesses)
    • •Value Added Tax (VAT) (if you offer VAT-taxable goods/services)
    • •Turnover Tax (TOT) (for businesses making less than Ksh 5 million annually)

Tip: If you are only applying for personal use (e.g., employment), select “Income Tax – Resident Individual” and leave others unchecked.

5: Submit & Receive Your KRA PIN

Once all fields are filled, submit the application and you’ll receive a KRA PIN Certificate via email. You can also download it directly from your iTax account.

How to Apply for a KRA PIN in Kenya (For Foreigners)

Foreigners in Kenya must have an Alien ID or valid work permit before applying for a KRA PIN. The application process differs based on residency status.

Option 1: Foreigners With a Work Permit (Resident)

    • •Foreigners with valid work permits are treated as tax residents and can apply online.
    • •Follow the same steps as Kenyans, but use your Alien ID number instead of a National ID.

Option 2: Foreigners Without a Work Permit (Non-Resident)

    • •Non-residents must apply manually at a KRA office.
    • •They require a Kenyan sponsor (local business or employer) to assist in the process.
    • •A passport copy and business registration details are needed.

Foreigners must visit a KRA office for approval before receiving a PIN.

    Conclusion

Getting a KRA PIN is an essential step for both individuals and businesses in Kenya. Whether you’re a Kenyan citizen or a foreigner, the process is straightforward if you have the right documents. By following this guide, you can easily apply for your PIN online and stay tax compliant.
