How Safaricom’s Ecosystem Enhances job Creation

Safaricom aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that aims to reduce inequalities by enabling equal access to opportunities to everyone, especially to vulnerable groups, using the firm’s leadership, network, solutions, and technology.

As of March 2019, Safaricom had 167,083 M-Pesa Agents and 433 dealers in addition to sustaining 978,633 direct and indirect jobs.

    Diversity and inclusion

According to 2019 Business Sustainability Report, Safaricom has pledged to increase the number of differently-abled employees to five per cent of the workforce by 2021 from the current 2.1 per cent of the total staff.

In addition, the telco aims to maintain gender parity with 50 per cent of the permanent staff being female. However, only 34 per cent of the senior managers and 27 per cent of the executive leaders are female. Safaricom hopes to achieve equal gender representation in senior management by 2021.

Furthermore, initiatives such as Women in Leadership and Women in Technology aim to increase women leadership.

On top of that, the Women in Business initiative provide contracts and tenders to women-owned companies thus increasing job creation. In this case, Safaricom hopes to increase the share of women-owned businesses in their supply chain from the current 3.2 per cent to 10 per cent by 2020.
