The government, through Kenya Railways, has procured four locomotive engines that will enable hourly commuter trains services around Nairobi. The service will be introduced in four routes that currently have railway lines.
The new directive, set to begin next month, seeks to ease traffic congestion in the roads leading into and out of the city, as well as provide cheaper and reliable means of travel for commuters.
The routes are Ruiru, Embakasi, Athi River and Kikuyu to Nairobi.
Currently, the available commuter trains operate only twice a day, one trip to the city in the morning and the other out of town in the evening, at about 6.30pm. An example is the one that operates from Embakasi and the other from Ruiru.
