Kenya’s hass avocados have received a green light for early exports from the Directorate of Horticulture, after confirming maturity of the produce.
The government suspended exportation of the hass avocados in November last year amid premature export claims, with the directorate initially setting the end of March 2020 as the resumption date for exportation.
However, after a survey that confirmed maturity of the fruits, the directorate has re-adjusted the dates.
The export, though, is subject to the following conditions:
- Harvesting be done only in coffee zones which have shown maturity. Harvesting in tea zones will start on 1st April 2020
- Exporters to demonstrate maturity before shipping out
- Directorate to sample all consignments for maturity at the packing facility before being cleared for exports
Kenya already resumed exportation of its fuerte avocados in February this year, with a 4 kilogram carton selling at KSh1,760, compared to KSh1,100 at the same period last year.
