Gov't Unveils KSh220 Million Kanyuambora Irrigation Project

The Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, has unveiled a KSh220 million Kanyuambora irrigation project in Mbeere, Embu County.

The project, funded by the national government under the National Irrigation Authority, is expected to be completed within one and a half years. It is expected to benefit at least 1,250 residents who experience frequent drought due to unreliable rainfall.

The CS Ministry of Water Sanitation and Irrigation Sicily K. Kariuki also notified the farmers that the Authority will train them on the best farming practices to fully benefit from the project by growing high-value crops as the government continues to implement projects towards achieving the Big 4 targets.

Kanyuambora Irrigation Project targets 625 acres of land to be put under irrigation using water abstracted from Rupiganzi River. 1,250 farmers will benefit from the project directly once the project is completed by 25th April 2022.

The proposed crops to be grown in the project include horticultural crops such as tomatoes, onions and kales.

The Kanyuambora project is currently 17% complete and is expected to improve cropping intensity, generate income, improve nutrition in the community, and create employment upon completion. According to tender documents, the contractor is expected to construct an intake weir, a sedimentation basin, an infield system, among others.
