Govt Bans Importation of Milk Powder

The government has banned the importation of milk powder into the country with the expectation of increased milk production due to the upcoming long rains.

The Kenya Dairy Board intends to protect the industry from excess production and low prices for producers in preparation for the upcoming long rainy season.

The Board’s Managing Director Margaret Kibogy announced a temporary suspension of import permit issuance until further notice.

However, we will continue to monitor the production and demand for milk powder and milk products in the country and advise the government accordingly.

The government’s decision is perceived as contradictory to the principles of the free movement of goods and services and the establishment of a common market under the East Africa Community (EAC) free trade agreements.

According to Uganda’s NRM Eastern national vice chairman, Mike Mukula, this action could potentially lead to an open trade conflict among EAC member nations.

Additionally, Kenya depends on Uganda and Rwanda as its primary sources of imported milk products from Africa.
