The issuance of mining licenses accounted for the largest share of income to the mining sector, contributing KSh 154 Billion of KSh 223.6 billion the sector generated in 2024.
- •The mining dealer license, usually given out to individuals or companies for cutting, polishing, refining, and treating minerals was the least contributor, generating KSh 0.7 million to the ministry.
- •Clinker production in West Pokot, Iron Ore and steel Making in Taita Taveta, Gold Processing and Refining, and Flourspar Mining and Processing in Elgeyo Marakwet generated KSh 40 billion, KSh 11 billion, KSh 5.8 billion, KSh 4.5 billion respectively.
- •The total value for mineral production reduced from Ksh 33.8 billion in 2023 to Ksh 25.5 billion in 2024, mainly attributed to reduced earnings from titanium.
According to KNBS’ Economic Survey 2025, the production of titanium reduced from 280.7 metric tonnes in 2023 to 198.5 metric tonnes in 2024.
The production of Soda Ash increased to 265.0 metric tonnes in 2024 from 240.8 metric tonnes in 2023. Production of gemstones cut reduced from 6.9 metric tonnes in 2023 to 5.8 metric tonnes in 2024. The production of base metals recorded a 47.3% decrease to 33.3 thousand tonnes in the year under review.
The value of Soda Ash increased to KSh 2.2 billion in 2024 from KSh 1.7 billion in 2023. The value of crude salt recorded a 98.5% decrease from KSh 55.1 million in 2023 to KSh 0.8 million in 2024. The value of Soapstone reduced by 70.2% to KSh 21.7 million in the year under review.
The average export price per tonne of Soda Ash decreased from KSh 47.5 thousand in 2023 to KSh 32.5 thousand in 2024. The average export price per tonne of Salt decreased by 1.2% to KSh 14.2 thousand in 2024 while the average export price per tonne of Titanium Ore minerals increased by 5.4%.
