Cabinet has approved implementation of the Clean Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System in response to transportation challenges in the Nairobi metropolis.
- •The first phase of the BRT Core Line 3 covers 12.4 km from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to Dandora, with future extensions planned for Ngong Town and Tala.
- •By 2035, Core Line 3 is projected to transport 357,000 passengers daily using electric buses.
- •In September, Kenya Urban Roads Board (KURA) opened bidding for the Sh7.6 billion ($59 million) Nairobi’s Outering Bus Rapid Transit Line (BRT) project restricting it to firms from the Republic of Korea.
“This project will encompass transport infrastructure development, traffic management, fare collection, and operations. Core Line 3 will run from Kenyatta National Hospital to Dandora, passing through Ngong Road, Haile Salassie Avenue, Racecourse Road, Outering Rad, Ngara, Pangani Junction, Juja Road, Outering Road Junction, and Koma Rock Road,” said Cabinet in a memo.
“Core Line 3 will serve as a green corridor. Once completed, the line is poised to transport 14,000 passengers per direction during peak hours. As part of the corridor’s operational framework, only 18-metre electric buses will ply the 13 km route.”
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) said it has received $59 million towards the cost of establishment of BRT Line from the Export-Import Bank of Korea. Portion of the loan is intended to payments under the contract for establishment of BRT Line 5 project.
Work along the BRT Line 5 involves construction of a two-lane BRT Line along the entire length of Nairobi’s outering road of estimated length 10.5 kilometers, building of new footbridges and modification of existing ones, installation of electro-mechanical works, landscaping works, and construction of BRT stations.
All works on the BRT depot will include parking spaces and access road, fence, drains, installation of all electro-mechanical works, building works of approximately 1365m floor area and civil, electrical and mechanical works.
The project also includes the construction of a drainage system, street lighting, landscaping works, and any other improvements as may be approved by the engineers.
