Google Joins Facebook and Twitter in Charging VAT for Advertisements

Google has requested that sellers of goods and services in Kenya to submit the Kenya Revenue Authority’s (KRA) Pin before implementing a 16% VAT (VAT). Users have been asked to upload their pins to their Google Payments profile.

“Please update your Kenya PIN number in your Google payments profile. Once updated, you should start seeing the PIN number on your Google invoices. We recommend providing your PIN number as soon as possible to ensure our invoice includes this information.” It Said

According to the statement, those who do not update their profiles will have issues with invoice validity.

“Failure to provide your PIN number by February 1, 2023 may cause issues with invoice validity and possible implications for recovery of VAT costs, if you are entitled to reclaim,” it added.

The announcement comes ahead of the platform’s implementation of a 16 per cent value-added tax (VAT) on all taxable goods and services in Kenya.

The tech firm announced that it would begin collecting taxes on behalf of the National Government on February 1, 2023, raising the costs of products and services.

This follows the government’s introduction of the VAT (Digital Marketplace Supply) (Amendment) Regulation 2022.

“Due to new tax legislation in Kenya, starting February 1, 2023, the firm will be required to charge a 16% tax on all taxable goods and services,” the tech firm said in a statement.
