Fuel Prices at the Pump Drop as Levy Kicks in

The price of super petrol and diesel has fallen by KSh 5.00 per litre while that of Kerosene has decreased by KSh 7.28 per litre.
In Nairobi, the price of a litre of super petrol is KSh 129.72 per litre, Diesel is KSh 110.60 per litre and Kerosene is KSh 103.54 per litre.

Fuel prices in major towns in Kenya

In Mombasa, a litre of petrol, diesel and kerosene at the pump is KSh 127.46, KSh 108.36 and KSh 101.29 respectively.

In Nakuru, petrol, diesel and kerosene retail at KSh 129.24, KSh 110.43 and KSh 103.39 respectively.

In Eldoret, a litre of petrol is KSh 130.13, diesel is KSh 111.32 and a litre of kerosene costs KSh 104.27 while in Kisumu the same products cost KSh 130.12, KSh 111.30 and KSh 104.26 per litre respectively.

This is according to maximum wholesale and retail prices released by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority(EPRA) that will be in force until 14th November 2021.

The average landed cost of imported super petrol increase by 1.71% from US$ 548.36 per cubic metre in August to US$ 557.74 per cubic metre in September. Diesel increased by 3.10% to US$ 504.69 per cubic metre while kerosene decreased by 4.10% to US$ 477.75 per cubic metre.

Despite the increase in landed costs, the applicable pump prices for this cycle has been reduced through the use of petroleum development levy to cushion consumers.

    Price of Imported Murban Crude

The Free On Board(FOB) price of Murban crude oil lifted in September was posted at $ 73.50 per barrel, an increase of 1.60% from US$ 72.34 per barrel in August 2021.

Over the same period, the mean monthly US$ to Kenya Shilling exchange rate depreciated by 0.69% from 109.46 in August to 110.21 in September.

The Authority noted that some outlets were ignoring these prices and offering fuel products above the set limits, in breach of Section 99 of the Petroleum Act No 2 of 2019.

EPRA has set up a hotline that will remain operational during working hours and has asked stakeholders to engage its staff by calling 070933600 to report any issues related to compliance and enforcement.

The public can also send the message: “price name of major town” to 40850 to get an update of the latest fuel prices. They can also use the short code* 363# that will prompt them for their nearest major town before showing the latest prices at the pump.
