Foreign Guests Lift March-June Onward Hotel Bookings

The March-June onward hotel booking in the hospitality industry has recorded an improvement compared to similar period last year, due to increasing number of foreign guests.

Average bookings for Mombasa, Nairobi and the rest of the country shows an improvement in the months of March, April and June, according to data collected by Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) last month. However, onward booking in May is low in Mombasa and Nairobi this year compared to last year, while June bookings are higher in both cities, especially in Nairobi.

“The period which is normally considered as off-peak season was picking up with increasing foreign guests,” noted Central Bank of Kenya in its latest Market Perception Survey.

    • •The total number of arrivals through both Jomo Kenyatta (JKIA) and Moi International Airports (MIA) dropped from 143,942 persons in December 2023 to 134,665 persons in January 2024.
    • •In March last year, the total number of visitor arrivals through JKIA and MIA was 109,594.
    • •In April, May and June 2023, the two facilities recorded a total of 88, 654,  96, 254 and 132,297 visitor arrivals respectively.

According to the respondents, local business has been low due to the high cost of living, low purchasing power, increased flight charges, unfavourable park rates, among other reasons.
