NTSA ICT Director, Dr Fernando Wangila Passes Away

Dr. Fernando Wangila, ICT Director for the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) passed on on Friday. Dr. Wangila was known for his work in the digital transformation of the NTSA.

Fernando Wangila served as the Senior Deputy Director, heading NTSA’s ICT and innovation. In this role, Dr Wangila was in charge of developing 5-year technical strategies for the country’s transport sector. Before joining NTSA, he served as the head of ICT at the Independent Policing Authority Oversight (IPOA).

He was passionate about transparency and efficiency in doing business in government through transparent systems like blockchain.

Fernando Wangila was part of the team behind the Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS), a database that stores centralized road transport data available to the public. TIMS aimed at using data to improve service delivery, compliance, and integrate data for private proxies in the transport sector. TIMS was a testament to his commitment towards transparency, linking different databases to one identity. This improved the speed of service delivery at the NTSA.

Additionally, he was involved in the deployment of smart drivers licenses, with intent to reduce fraud.

His efforts to digitize Kenyan’s transport industry earned him the title East Africa’s CIO of the year in 2017.
