The Fairmont Norfolk hotel has reopened its doors to the public after remaining closed for two years.
Fairmont closed its Norfolk and Mara Safari Club hotels and fired all the employees due to the pandemic. The hotel cited the impact of the coronavirus on travel and the uncertainty as reasons behind the closure. The termination took effect on June 5th, 2020, upon which Fairmont issued termination letters.
The employees who had lost their jobs during the shutdown were all recalled to resume their duties. Currently, 70% have resumed (at least 140 of its employees).
Fairmont Norfolk is the second property under the Fairmont Kenya umbrella to reopen after Fairmont Mara, and paves way for the Fairmont Mount Kenya reopening that is set to take place in June.
Elsewhere, Radisson Blu, a global hotel brand has also announced that its Upper Hill Hotel establishment will reopen on 9th May 2022.
With COVID-19 numbers steadily dropping, Kenya projects the tourism sector, one of its top foreign exchange earners, to bring in KSh173 billion this year.
Tourist arrivals in Kenya registered a 53.29 % growth in 2021, at 870,465 compared to 567,848 in 2020 according to data released by the Tourism Research Institute.
