Ex-CBK Governor Njuguna Ndungu appointed Director of African Economic Research Consortium

The Board of Directors and Management of the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) has appointed Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u as the next AERC Executive Director effective September 1, 2018.

Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u is well known to the AERC network as a trainer and researcher; having served as the AERC Director of Training in the period 2003-2007. Over the years, Njuguna Ndung’u has held a variety of policy, academic, and advisory positions.

Njuguna Ndung’u is the immediate past Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), where he completed the full two 4-year terms, 2007-2015.

Prof Ndung’u ended his term at the bank under a cloud of controversy including irregular award of tenders, corruption and poor leadership that led to the collapse of Imperial Bank, Dubai Bank and Chase Bank in quick succession. He was been accused of colluding with bank managers to flout governance and operational rules.

However on a positive note, its is during his tenure that saw the rapid rise of Kenya in the financial inclusion space from the pioneering and transformative M-Pesa.

Njuguna Ndung’u has been an Associate Professor of Economics, University of Nairobi, and faculty member of the School of Economics at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, since 1987.

He has lectured in advanced economic theory and econometrics at the University and has published chapters in various books on economic policy issues.
