EU Grants Kenya KES 6 Billion for Refurbishment of the Olkaria Geothermal Power Plants

The European Union (EU) has granted Kenya KES 6 billion to refurbish Olkaria I and IV power plants in Naivasha.

The action will contribute to the government’s objective of boosting the utilization of renewable energy in the nation by adding 40 megawatts (MW) of geothermal energy to the national grid.

We have received KES 6 billion from the European Union  (EU) towards rehabilitating the Olkaria 1 and 4 power plants which will see the country get an extra 40MW.

Energy Cabinet Secretary – Davis Chirchir

This move is particularly crucial as the drought has had a negative impact on the generation of hydroelectricity.

The State has recently revealed its intention to obtain an additional 200MW of electricity from Ethiopia in response to the growing demand.

As stated by Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, the country aims to eliminate the use of fossil fuels by 2030, opting instead for renewable sources such as geothermal, solar, and wind power.

Davis Chirchir also mentioned that renewable energy accounts for 90% of the country’s increased electricity generation, which has risen from 1,600MW to 3,300MW over the past decade.
