Elon Musk Internet Company Starlink Enters Kenya, Heightening Competition

Competition in the provision of internet services is expected to accelerate as Starlink (a satellite provider) associated with billionaire Elon Musk enters Kenyan market.

Starlink, operated by American aerospace company SpaceX, offers a satellite internet service that uses a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Unlike traditional satellite internet, Starlink provides high-speed, low latency connectivity, supporting services not possible with traditional satellite technology.

On Tuesday, Karibu Connect, a provider of internet connectivity solutions in East Africa, announced that it has been appointed as the first authorized reseller of Starlink in Kenya. This marks a significant step in the company’s mission to eliminate the digital divide and enhance the connectivity infrastructure across the country.

“Our partnership with Starlink is a substantial progression in our mission to deliver affordable, high-quality internet access to all corners of Kenya,” said John Thuo, CEO of Karibu Connect.

“The deployment of Starlink’s groundbreaking technology will revolutionize how rural Kenya engages with the global community, fostering societal progress and driving economic growth,” he added.

Karibu Connect will extend Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency connectivity to diverse sectors in rural Kenya, including small businesses, industry, telecommunications, multi-dwelling units, education, tourism & hospitality, maritime, and government organizations.

Karibu Connect is offering Starlink enterprise services for both fixed and mobile applications, including vehicle mounted solutions for use on-the-go or on boats and ships operating both inland and offshore.

Backed by an in-country support team offering 24/7 assistance, Karibu Connect also provides an online portal for seamless monitoring and management of all aspects of Starlink services. Tailored solutions for public Wi-Fi hotspots and 4G/5G backhaul will also be available.

The entry of Starlink is expected to heighten competition in the Internet business in Kenya. On Monday, Safaricom announced plans to launch satellite internet services through a partnership with Starlink’s rival AST SpaceMobile. Safaricom and other Vodafone affiliates will share revenue with AST SpaceMobile on a 50/50 basis, with the parties agreeing to maintain mutual exclusivity in their markets to ensure the success of the partnership.
