East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL) has released its group corporate relations director Julie Adell-Owino. The two parties indicate this was done amicably.

Adell-Owino was extensively named in the BAT-Kenya bribery claims in a BBC Panorama program  She describes this as a ‘shock to her and her family’

“In 2012, BAT lobbyist Julie Adell-Owino arranged bribes totalling US$26,000 for three public officials in Rwanda, Burundi and the Comoros Islands. All three officials were connected to a United Nations effort to reduce the number of tobacco related deaths, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control,” reads part of the story.

On phone, Ms Adell-Owino noted that it was her request to leave the company.

“My role in the organization requires that I operate with integrity. In the view of the story by the BBC, I requested to take time away from EABL and clear my name,” she said.

She added that the management accepted her decision and at the moment she was engaging her lawyers on the matter.

The investigative piece also mentioned senior politician Moses Wetangula (Bungoma Senator) as a recipient of the scheme.

Adell-Owino joined EABL in June this year (2015) to replace Brenda Mbathi who moved to General Electric.

The brewer at the time told the Business Daily that ‘She is an experienced corporate affairs, policy and regulation specialist with over 24 years experience in both the private and public sectors,”

“The content of the story by the BBC must be placed in context. The pseudo emails must be verified,” she added

According to The Business Daily she left BAT in September 2012 and became the managing director of Jumon Africa Business Solution —a management consulting company.

BAT has said its accusers are former employees that aggrieved in the manner in which they left the organization.
