Daniel Kiptoo Named Head of the Energy Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA)

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has named Daniel Kiptoo as the new Director-General of the energy regulatory body with effect from 1st July 2021. Daniel Kiptoo has been the acting director-general of EPRA since December last year when he replaced Pavel Oimeke. He will now serve as the head of the regulatory agency for a 3-year term which is renewable once.

While announcing his appointment, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority said it followed a rigorous recruitment process in which Mr Kiptoo emerged as the best candidate for the role.

Mr Kiptoo will oversee EPRA as it pushes for sustainable and clean energy in Kenya. He will lead a team of 8 senior managers in regulating the energy sector in the country.

Prior to joining ERPA, Mr Kiptoo worked as the Legal Advisor to the Ministry of Energy and State Department of Petroleum. He also served as the Chairman of the government’s First Oil Committee.

Mr Kiptoo is highly experienced in the Energy and Petroleum Industry, particularly in Policy formulation, Regulation and Project and Structured Finance. He played an important role in drafting the Petroleum Act (2019) and the Energy Act (2019).

The new EPRA Director-General holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and a Masters Degree in Petroleum Law and Policy from the University of Dundee Scotland. In addition, he is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, a Certified Public Secretary, and a member of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators in the UK.
