The Copyright Board has said it will reintroduce registration charges On July 1, 2022. The Kenya Copyright Board said registration will remain free for the next month. The law requires the Board to have a data bank of authors and their works by registering their works in an exercise that is voluntary.
However, non-registration does not infringe on any rights under the law.
Registration of works enables the creation of a record of authors and owners. The registration certificate also shows ownership of a copyright and can be used as security to obtain a loan from the bank or any other lender.
Registration per work is KSh 100 per person and KSh 500 for corporate entities, while corporate registration per software registration is KSh 100 per person and KSh 1000 for corporate entities.
The National Rights Registry (NRR) portal is the central repository that enables holders to register and view/download certificates. The portal allows rights holders of all works, including music, video, spoken word and literary works.
