Kenya Power has signed a 20 year power purchase agreement with Bahari Wind for a 90 MW wind energy farm. Bahari Wind in Lamu county is a joint venture between Kenyan developer Kenwind and Elicio NV from Belgium.
According to a statement, the power purchase agreement provides Bahari Wind the offtake certainty it needed to advance the project. Furthermore, the project will be an important addition to their distribution source in the coastal region for their midterm generation plan.
The Ksh18 billion ($180 million) project will have 22 turbines making it Kenya’s third largest wind power farm after the 310MW Lake Turkana and 100MW Kipeto wind farm.
Further, Elicio expects to start construction of the wind farm in 2022. The Kenyan developer Kenwind will own, operate, and maintain the wind farm.
