Why You Should Consider Britam’s Money Market Fund

Nairobi Securities Exchange listed investment firm, Britam Holdings PLC through its Asset Management arm (Britam Asset Managers (Kenya) Ltd) recently launched a new mobile platform to cater for new and existing investors who would like to invest the Britam Money Market Fund. The Britam Money Market Fund, seeks to provide investors with a competitive interest rate and capital preservation in the short term. The fund mainly invests in short term deposits which include: Government Treasury Bills, Treasury bonds, Commercial paper and bank deposits of less than 12 months maturity profile.

With a minimum of Kshs. 1000, Britam’s Money Market Fund is considered one of the most affordable investment options in the Kenyan market. Previously, investors had to invest a minimum of Kshs. 10,000 to get into the fund, with top ups of Kshs. 5,000. Although the fund mainly invests in short-term instruments, the amount of income that a shareholder may receive will be largely dependent on the current interest rate environment. Investors who have a short-term savings goal and are interested in a fund that invests in securities issued by the Kenyan government may wish to consider this option.

While unveiling the fund, Britam Asset Managers CEO Mr Kenneth Kaniu said the phone based Money Market Fund is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly, allowing investors to participate via USSD code *778#. Once registered, the investment account can easily be topped up via Safaricom’s M-Pesa service at the investor’s convenience.

“Many Kenyans have been locked out from saving and investing their money because of the big initial capital amounts needed in the money market. This fund has therefore been designed to address the needs of the small saver,” said Kenneth Kaniu.

Why Invest in the Britam Money Market Fund?

One of the key investment objectives of the fund is to preserve shareholders’ principal investment by investing in a diversified portfolio of high-quality, short-term money market instruments. Typically, it provides current income by allowing investors to access their cash when they need it with flexible withdrawals within 48 hours straight to your MPESA account.

Another good thing about the fund is the convenience and transparency given that it’s relatively easy to transact and provide investors with a range of information on the underlying portfolio, including portfolio holdings.

The fund is also convenient for investors who would wish to diversify from single issuer risk, and access professional asset management and operational expertise and can therefore play an important role in construction of your portfolio.
