Githii Mburu, the Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), has resigned abruptly after serving for three years and seven months. The KRA board has appointed Risper Simiyu, the Commissioner of Domestic Taxes, to act as the new boss effective from Thursday, February 23.
Mrs. Simiyu is a highly experienced tax professional with over 19 years of experience. She worked as a Regional Tax Manager at Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Limited before joining KRA in April 2018.
Simiyu is a qualified Chartered Accountant, a Fellow Chartered and Certified Accountant (FCCA), an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, a member of the Law Society of Kenya, and a Certified Public Secretary. She holds a Master of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi with a focus on International Trade and Investment.
Having practiced and consulted on tax matters in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, Simiyu is well versed in the tax laws of these countries.
It is not clear whether Mburu resigned voluntarily or was fired from his position. However, the KRA board’s decision to appoint Simiyu as the new acting boss suggests that they have confidence in her ability to lead the organization.
