CMA To Take Part In WIW As Part Of Creating Awareness

The Capital Markets Authority (CMA) is set to take part for the second time, in the annual World Investor Week (WIW) 2018, as part of the authority’s Education and Public Awareness Strategy.

During the one week event, the authority is expected to conduct engagements targeting university students and investor education outreach through Huduma Centres in Trans-Nzoia, Kisii and Nakuru as well as vernacular radio campaigns, social media campaign and a scavenger hunt competition on the Resource Centre Portal.

”Out of Kenya’s population of 45 million, a third are between the ages of 15- 24 years. Moreover, it is also estimated that 78% of the Kenyan population is below the age of 35. It is in this regard that the Authority will continue to allocate awareness and empowerment resources having the interests and perspectives of our future generations in mind, ” the CMA chair James Ndegwa said.

The event which brings 80 countries from six continents executing investor focused activities, is an initiative of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO)

The CMA Chief Executive Mr. Paul Muthaura  on his part observed, the Authority has developed a more robust awareness strategy that was informed by a Capital Markets Investor Education Behavioural and Situational Study completed in July 2018 which also developed an impact Index to inform future awareness initiatives. He further indicated that in line with this strategy the Authority’s messaging during the WIW will focus on ‘Investor Protection’ and ‘Knowing the Capital Markets Products Available to the Public’

The World Bank Group, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), International Forum for Investor Education (IFIE), Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), International Network of Financial Services Ombudsman Schemes (INFO) and G20 Germany are supporting the global outreach initiative. WIW is expected to offer an opportunity to IOSCO members to work in collaboration with all investor education and protection stakeholders, at both the local and international level.

The World Investor Week (WIW) 2018 will be taking place from 1-8 October, 2018.
