Clearing and forwarding firms at the Nairobi Inland Container Depot (ICD) have protested against the new verification fee that Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is imposing on them.
The Star reports that workers from the clearing firms have since downed their tools, accusing the port authorities of imposing a KSh12,099 verification fee on a twenty-foot container and between KSh16,132 and KSh20,166 for 40-foot containers.
If this persists, then the trickle-down effect will be increased cargo delays, with an increase in the cost of doing business.
According to the Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association, the fee imposition is illegal, seeing that the authority did not issue a public notice in advance.
