CIC Insurance Group Names Dr Nelson Kuria as Chairman of its Board

CIC Insurance Group has picked Dr Nelson Kuria as the new Chairman of its board of directors with effect from 29th June 2021. Dr Kuria takes over from Japheth Magomere who has retired from the role, after serving as chairman for the past 16 years.

Dr Kuria is an insurance industry expert with more than 36 years of experience both in the public and private sector. He was the CIC Insurance Chief Executive Officer, in charge of the group and its subsidiaries, from July 2001 until his retirement in February 2015. While he worked as CEO of CIC group, Dr Kuria was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the insurance industry for his positive contribution to the sector. Additionally, in 2019, he was crowned as a Fellow member of the Institute of Directors (IOD) of Kenya for his contribution to the development of corporate governance in Kenya.

The newly appointed CIC Group Chairman has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Nairobi and a Masters in Leadership Studies from the International Leadership University (ILU). He also has an Honorary Doctorate in Leadership awarded by the Swiss Management Academy in 2017. Dr Kuria is a graduate of the Executive leadership training program from Stanford Graduate School of Business.

CIC Insurance Group has also announced the appointment of James Njue Njiru as the Vice Chairman of the group. He replaces Peter Kipkirui Nyigei who has been on the CIC board since 2009. Currently, James serves as the Chairman of Co-operative Insurance Society Ltd (CIS), and Chairman of Nawiri Sacco Society. He is also a director at the Cooperative Bank of Kenya. James has a diploma in Business Management from the Kenya Institute of Management and he belongs to the Institute of Directors of Kenya.

As part of the leadership changes, Jyoti Patel has retired as the Chair of the Audit Committee, and as a member of the CIC board. Jyoti joined the board as an independent non-executive director in 2018.

The Board of CIC Insurance group has welcomed the changes on its board of directors by congratulating the new appointees.
