Retail Chain, Choppies Supermarket, has laid off a total of 583 staff since September last year, as it struggles to remain afloat in the highly competitive supermarket business.
Court documents filed by the Kenya Union of Commercial Food and Allied Workers reveal that on 15th November 2019, the retail chain fired 486 employees on redundancy claims, while an additional 51 employees were affected by the same redundancy in Nanyuki on 31st October 2019.
Furthermore, 46 staff members left employment due to undisclosed reasons.
The Union is in court seeking to have the retailer settle all the affected staff’s dues before it completely exits the Kenyan market. According to the staff, Choppies owes them a total of KSh12.5 million in terminal dues.
In February this year, Tusker Mattresses, popularly known as Tuskys, also fired an undisclosed number of employess on redundancy claims.
