The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has signed a construction agreement with China Road and Bridge Construction (CRBC) for the building of a temporary pedestrian bridge in Likoni.
The project, dubbed the Likoni Floating Bridge, seeks to ease human congestion at the Likoni Channel so as to curb the spread of coronavirus in the region. It is a different project from the permanent bridge across the water body, whose construction is yet to begin.

According to Construction Kenya, the bridge will comprise a 529-meter floating section stretching from north to south of Likoni, with 54-meter approaches on either side of the floating span. Pins and hinges will connect it with guard rails mounted on either side of the deck to guarantee pedestrians’ safety.
With ships occasionally crossing the channel either to or from the port, the bridge project will involve the construction of pile foundations and a bailey bridge with movable main steel bridge in the middle of the channel.
The project will cost the government KSh1.5 billion.
