China Exempts More U.S. Goods from Tariffs

China has announced the exemption of tariffs for 79 items from the US, for a period of one year, with effect from 19th May 2020.

The goods in context include U.S. aircraft radar and radar equipment, medical disinfectants, rare-earth ore, silver and gold ore and concentrate, some nickel, aluminum alloy products.

However, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council did not disclose the import value of the products.

In September 2019, China exempted 16 categories of American products from tariffs for a period of one year, in the implementation of China-U.S. phase one deal. The move aimed to support Chinese companies to purchase and import goods from the U.S.

The categories exempted from the tariffs last year included seafood products, cancer drugs, alfalfa pellets, fish feed, medical linear accelerators, and mould release agents.

In January this year, the U.S. and China signed the first phase of a broader trade pact, committing China to do more to crack down on the theft of American technology and corporate secrets by its companies and state entities, while outlining a $200 billion spending spree to try to close its trade imbalance with the U.S.
