Web3 technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with one another and conduct business, but for it to truly reach mainstream adoption, it needs to be accessible and user-friendly for everyday people. That’s exactly what Celo, a blockchain company dedicated to nurturing and promoting the mobile-first, carbon-negative layer-1 Celo blockchain and its ecosystem is aiming to do with their recent rebrand.
But why is Africa the biggest winner in this? Africa has the potential to be a major player in the blockchain space due to its large population, rapidly growing economy, and high mobile penetration rate. The continent has already seen a lot of innovation in mobile banking, and blockchain technology has the potential to take this even further.
Celo’s focus on inclusivity and accessibility aligns well with the needs of many African countries. The ability to transact in multiple languages and currencies is particularly important in a continent where there are many different languages and currencies in use. Additionally, Celo’s blockchain is designed to work well on low-end smartphones, which are more common in Africa.
Web3 infrastructure
For the last two years, Celo has been quietly building the infrastructure for Web3 in Africa through a variety of initiatives, such as partnering with startups and small businesses to provide them with the resources and support they need to develop and scale their products and services.
Celo is also working with emerging tech entrepreneurs to build solutions for Africa by giving them access to funding, and exposure to potential customers and partners.
Many people in Africa do not have access to traditional banking services and instead rely on mobile money to manage their finances. Celo is supporting web3 developers across the continent to create Decentralized apps that allow people to use their mobile phones as bank accounts, allowing them to send and receive money, make payments, and access other financial services. These initiatives are in line with Celo’s recent rebranding which is also aimed at mainstream adoption of web3 by everyday users worldwide. By making the technology more accessible and user-friendly, Celo hopes to increase the adoption of web3 in Africa and other regions.
Some of the solutions that have emerged from Africa’s Celo ecosystem include Apps that can be used in agriculture, healthcare, and education.
Hackathons
One way that Celo supports the development of Web3 in Africa is by holding and supporting hackathons in universities and coworking spaces across the continent. These hackathons provide a platform for students and young developers to learn about web3 technology and to develop solutions that can address specific challenges in Africa.
Code Beyond Barriers Hackathon by Ushahidi and Celo
Most recently, Celo Kenya partnered with Ushahidi to hold the Code Beyond Barriers Hackathon Kenya 2023 from January 14th–21st, 2023.
The aim of this hackathon was to offer participants the opportunity to build innovative solutions across the themes of good governance, human rights protection, climate change, and disaster relief to bring out innovative web3 solutions that can be leveraged to give marginalized communities a voice and make sure the underrepresented in communities are equally heard and served.
About 10 teams (groups of 4 and 5) registered for the hackathon, and 7 solutions were submitted on the final day of the hackathon.
Celo’s focus on creating a more inclusive ecosystem will also benefit Africa by providing more opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs. By making it easy for people to start and run businesses on the blockchain, Celo is helping to create a more level playing field for small businesses and entrepreneurs, who may not have had access to the same resources as larger companies in the past.
Overall, Celo’s rebrand and focus on mainstream adoption of Web3 is a step in the right direction for blockchain technology. The company’s focus on inclusivity and accessibility will make it easy for everyday people to use web3 technology, which is key to reaching mainstream adoption. And with Africa’s potential to be a major player in the blockchain space, the continent stands to benefit greatly from Celo’s efforts.
