Cathay Pacific Workers Go on Leave

Cathay Pacific has sent its workers on a three-weeks unpaid leave, a move that has been necessitated by the coronavirus outbreak, that has led to airlines cancelling flights to China, and travelers cancelling trips to affected destinations.

The airline’s CEO, Augustus Tang Kin-wing, asked the almost 27,000 staff to take the leave in turns on a voluntary basis, running from March to June.

At the end of January, the airline announced plans to reduce flight frequencies to and from mainland China by 90% or more from 30th January to the end of March 2020, and 30% worldwide.

Cathay Pacific is the flag carrier of Hong Kong, with its head office and main hub located at Hong Kong International Airport. The airline’s operations and subsidiaries have scheduled passenger and cargo services to more than 190 destinations in more than 60 countries worldwide including codeshares and joint ventures.

Cathay Pacific is the world’s tenth largest airline measured by sales, and fourteenth largest measured by market capitalization.
