Retail chain, Carrefour Supermarket has debuted in Mombasa, opening it very first branch outside Nairobi at City Mall, Nyali. The new store becomes the chain’s ninth, countrywide.
As the Star reports, the new store will create both direct and indirect jobs by employing 190 people, which include a dedicated Mombasa customer service team to assist in resolving any issues. The supermarket will also provide on-demand delivery services from its Nyali store through its partners; Jumia Food and Glovo.
Carrefour Kenya already operates eight stores in Nairobi, with plans to launch an additional two stores in the Coastal region; at the Diani Centre Point Plaza and Shanzu Mall.
Carrefour, which is operated by Majid Al Futtaim, took over space previously occupied by South African retailer Shoprite, which has exited Kenya citing the underperformance of its supermarkets.
In May this year, the retail chain received a KSh3 billion loan from South Africa’s Standard Bank Group to expand its supermarkets business in Kenya.
