The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) has appointed Dr Adano Wario to serve as Acting Director-General following the end of Mr Wang’ombe Kariuki’s second and last term. Dr Wario’s task is to ensure business continuity and uninterrupted service delivery.
“We owe immense gratitude to Mr. Kariuki who departs after overseeing the CAK’s transformation from a department within the Ministry of Finance to a semi-autonomous institution that is held in high regards by stakeholders, nationally, originally and internationally,” said CAK
Before his appointment by CAK, Dr Roba served as the Authority’s Director of Planning, Research, Policy, and Quality Assurance. In this position, which he has held since July 2018, Dr Roba was responsible for, among others, developing effective strategies for economic analysis and policy to inform the Authority’s mandate execution.
He has over fifteen (15) years of experience in applied research, policy-making and the development of legislative frameworks. At the Authority, he has spearheaded various research initiatives and projects, such as inquiries and market studies into sectors such as fertilizer, digital credit, shipping, leasing, and banking, among others.
Dr Roba was also a Senior Policy Analyst at the National Treasury & Planning’s Fiscal & Economic Affairs Department. He was responsible for formulating mineral resource revenue use policy and fiscal rules and developing a legislative framework for managing mineral resource revenues.
At the National Treasury, he was actively involved in several task forces that developed legislation on climate change, petroleum, minerals, energy and related policies and regulations. Between 2017 and 2018, he served as Chairperson to the Steering Committee of Strathmore University’s Extractives Baraza, formerly the Information Centre for Extractives Sector.
In addition, Dr Roba has also served as a Senior Lecturer in environmental economics at the University of Eldoret and Moi University. He earned his PhD from the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and an MSc from the University of York (UK).
